The Secret to Living
Inspired from the sense concept taught during Sensory Objects, and in light of me personally having the hobby of producing music/ playing with synthesisers, l decided to create an interactive art work in Open Share Project. Technically having a strong interest in Processing, l decided to confirm Processing as the medium to create this work.
The topic of this project stems from my reflection on the various voices towards the currently very popular documentary named Seaspiracy. Although the documentary itself is trying to clearly demonstrate how harmful it is to consume seafood with accurate data, there are still loads of criticism towards this documentary, claiming that it's using much more exaggerating descriptions than the actual fact. In this way, my confusion is that as long as everything in this society cannot be absolutely convincing, then where's the solution? Or how should l evaluate this cruel fact? Finally another documentary named The Secret helped me a lot, from which admits the diversity of this universe, and appeals every individual to live his own life to keep happy. Similarly, l was also greatly inspired from the book Speculative Everything, from which appeals that in the design domain, we should try our best to provoke and explore new possibilities. The book Feeling Is the Secret also helped me a lot with its concept that "Possibility is the prerequisite of everything existential, and everything existential has its own relativities (good/ bad, right/ wrong, etc)".
Following this thread of concept, my final work is trying to use different metaphors to embody the concepts l've explored. The theme "As Black So White" refers back to the "As...So..." concept in the book "Feeling Is the Secret". The reason why l choose black and white as the only two colour in this coding is because this comparison could more provocatively highlight the concept of "relativity". The metaphor behind the colour is to indicate that possibilities matter more than judgements/ preconceptions. By using sin function to create a dynamic scenario, l want to indicate that life is in flux and flows every moment. In this way, the main part of this video, which is me hitting the MIDI keyboard to generate different patterns on the screen, as well as generating a relaxed background music clip, is to appeal that we should keep positive and create our own unique life patterns. The change of the BPM also indicates the ageing process of each individual as human beings, from the start of life, to the peak time of life, and then return back to the elder edge of life.
