Narrative Voices aims to explore themes of misinformation in the digital age. I shot and edited footage of my friend, in front of a green screen, performing the role of three separate characters who would be used to represent different issues relating to the internet. I wanted to make use of over-dubbing and subtitles in a way which was manic and confusing to try and create a feeling of becoming overwhelmed with information. Along with the visuals, I created an audio track which consisted of three different text-to-speech voices reading the same script but with the voices chopped up and interrupting each other, I also added an ominous slowed down background noise and a classical music piece to accompany the video. The footage was edited so that the audio was clearly out of sync with the video and there would be a clashing of information between the visual footage, the audio track and the subtitles I chose to overlay the footage with.
My aim was to create a piece of work which contains synthetic characters who were all playing a role with the purpose of making the viewer think about authenticity online and miscommunication/misinformation. Another film piece which inspired me greatly was 'A Spectacular Reality' by Ben Ditto which explores ideas of crisis-actors and false news narratives. Although I was inspired by this work, I wanted to take mine into a new direction where the characters were explicitly false and although this is established right away, the film still tries to rope the viewer into becoming invested in what the characters are saying, then in the end a curtain drops and it's reaffirmed that nothing being shown was real.
To accompany the final video I created six posters which would aid the video in a hypothetical campaign. These are very vague and are designed to strike a curiosity in the viewer. The text is hard to read and the images were made by taking pictures of the video on my computer screen, this was to keep it grounded in it's themes of digital media, also supported by the QR codes linking to the video on the first three posters. The first three are visually connected with the focus point being the subjects eyes, there is also a consistent use of faded text over the face. The other three consist of the subjects face being warped and subverted with chopped up text running down the center stating the title of the work. I tried to make them provocative and striking whilst giving away information sparingly.
