Smashed Glass
I decided to combine two previous projects, Dimensions and Projection Mapping. Both were projects that I enjoyed and wanted to refine further. Previously I had focused on the process of decay/rot and had used an apple as the subject matter. I was also then interested in using light to interpret this due to the contrast in themes of decay and light.
I found myself basing my projections on societies view of women after listening to a few experiences some women had talked about online and in person. Their experiences mainly centred around beauty standards and how they felt 'less desirable' as they were getting older. I found myself using subject matter such as fruit and windows to represent this view of women. As I focused on the theme of decay, I then used this change over time theme to shatter the windows and fruit I had made from light projections of crystals and shards of glass. However, I wanted to keep the light travelling with the shattering shards as they are still beautiful to look at, if not more interesting. I wanted to highlight the beauty in the ageing process and celebrate it by breaking the glass. It was important for me to represent precious materials as women can sometimes be viewed as objects.
I had used colours that are commonly seen in sunrises and sunsets. I wanted to show the changing colours of the day through stained glass. I had made sure that the shards were transparent as displaying change over time was important in reflecting the ageing process. I projected the window onto a slanted ceiling in a staircase, giving a nod to the phrase "breaking the glass ceiling", this was effective in creating a connection to my feminist approach.
