A Small Wall, like most of my other pieces this year, centres itself around the themes of isolation and small spaces. COVID has undoubtably influenced my work, not only from a thematic perspective, but also through my creative process. I found myself working on lots of small projects, especially around my room, throughout the first lockdown, and for me Augmented Reality was a nice way to really conclude those projects.
The 'Augmented Reality' project was an especially nice piece for me to go back to during open source, as it seemed to be a good combination of my main focuses this year. The colour contrast between the Manga panels and the activated GIFs, the way the focus came from a hands-on project I had created previously. Everything right down to the images I had picked for the wall were some of my favourite moments from those programs.
Both virtual and augmented reality are areas that have captured my interest over COVID as well. Taking place as the main theme in both my DH&T essays, as well as sources of inspiration for several projects. Whether it’s something smaller like Mirages & Miracles (by Adrien M & Claire B) or a global project like Pokémon Go, AR and VR present a brand-new layer to the world for artists to work with.
Using this new layer to bring my art to life really did conclude some of my wall- based projects for me and being able to work in an area I'm this passionate about was one of the most enjoyable projects of the year.
