In todays society, interaction and communication has became governed by digital media due to the limitations on physical interaction caused by the global pandemic. The rise of digital media being used as the sole form of communication has formed a barrier of sorts that prevents us from truly being able to perceive the identity of others. This is because we cannot see certain physical indicators of ones personality such as body language, facial expression and tone of voice. Since we cannot perceive these indicators we are often getting a warped version of what a persons really like. In this assignment I aimed to investigate how I can convey this idea of a distorted identity by creating an interactive poster showcasing my theme in a visually striking and theoretically engaging way.
To convey the idea of distortion in this assignment I focused most of my research on finding ways that shapes can be used to deconstruct the human form. I studied many different artists who have created abstract paintings involving the human figure such as Umberto Boccioni. Boccioni uses triangles and lines to deconstruct the human face which creates a very visually interesting design which inspired me to use similar shapes in my own work. By using these types of shapes I was able to create a stylish abstract visual which gave me the distorted effect I was trying to achieve.
The imagery of my final interactive poster consists of a female model who's appearance becomes gradually warped depending on the mouses location on the screen. This effect can be best seen in the video above which shows the gradual degradation of my posters design over a short period of time. When I was experimenting with the colours for this piece I ended up creating a layered visual that gave the illusion that the image is glitching out. This effect suits my theme perfectly as it gives the illusion that there is two faces which conveys my idea of distorted identity as its shows that there is more to a persons personality than what meets the eye.
